Books vs. Courses: What’s the Best Way to Prepare for the PE Exam

4/6/2025

One of the first decisions engineers face when preparing for the PE exam is choosing between self-study using books or taking a course—and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The best option depends on your learning style, schedule, budget, and how comfortable you are with the exam topics. Both methods can work, but the key is choosing reliable, high-quality resources.

Courses and webinars can provide structure, accountability, and direct access to instructors. For some engineers—especially those who struggle with motivation or want guidance on how to study—this can be extremely helpful. However, not all courses are created equal. It’s important to research the provider, check reviews from previous students, and make sure the material is up-to-date with the current NCEES or BPELSG exam specifications.

On the other hand, many engineers succeed through independent study with books—especially those who prefer learning at their own pace or have prior experience with the exam content. If you’re going this route, make sure you invest in books that don’t just present theory but include many examples, solved problems, and visual aids. At Petro Publications, we’ve designed our books with this in mind: the theory is explained through questions and practical applications, not just abstract concepts.

Another advantage of books is cost. Courses can be expensive, while books provide long-term access and the flexibility to revisit concepts whenever you need. Still, the key is to choose wisely—read reviews, look at sample pages if available, and pick resources that align with your chosen discipline and depth section.

Ultimately, the best study method is the one that keeps you engaged, helps you retain information, and mirrors the type of problem-solving required on the exam. Whether you choose books, a course, or a mix of both, make sure your materials are credible, focused, and proven to work.
